Philip J. Lombardo, CEO of Citadel Communications and chairman emeritus of the Broadcasters Foundation of America, died Friday following a brief illness. He was 88.

“Last night, the Broadcasters Foundation and the broadcast industry lost a great man,” said Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation. “As chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation for many years, Phil left an indelible mark. He was passionate about our mission and one of our biggest donors, giving both time and money to helping colleagues in need.”

“It would be impossible for me to quantify all that I learned from Phil Lombardo over the course of our nearly 40-year association,” said Ray Cole, president and COO, Citadel Communications. “Phil was a boss, a mentor, and a partner. Most of all, he was a dear friend who changed my life in immeasurable ways. While his impact on the broadcasting industry was vast and deep, Phil’s enduring legacy will be the vision and passion with which he led the Broadcasters Foundation of America. His contributions to its mission — helping fellow broadcasters in need — had no bounds. That commitment is sure to live on forever.”

NAB President-CEO Curtis LeGeyt said in a statement: “Phil Lombardo was a pioneer in the broadcasting industry; his contributions were immense and his influence widespread. His passion for broadcasting set a standard that will continue to inspire generations to come.

“Phil’s leadership extended beyond his business achievements. His service as NAB joint board chair helped shape the future of our association and left an indelible mark on our industry. But his legacy will certainly be his work to help broadcasters in their times of greatest need, through the Broadcasters Foundation of America (BFOA). I had the privilege of serving with him on the BFOA board and witnessing firsthand his unwavering dedication to the men and women of the broadcast industry, giving back to those who have given so much to our communities across the country.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Phil’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. His legacy will live on, and he will be deeply missed.”

Lombardo’s impactful role as Broadcasters Foundation chairman from 2000 to 2015 was vital to the foundation’s ability to increase the amount of grants awarded annually to broadcasters in need from just over $60,000 in 2000 to nearly $2 million in recent years.

“Phil had a strong personality, but his heart was bigger,” added Tim McCarthy, president of the  foundation. “No one worked harder than Phil to raise money from our biggest donors. He gave more than anyone in our industry to colleagues who need it most.”

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Philip J. Lombardo Memorial Fund, which will be established by the Broadcasters Foundation next week in honor of Lombardo’s dedication and service to the broadcasting industry and to the foundation’s charitable cause.

To honor his longstanding dedication to the Broadcasters Foundation, in 2000 the board passed a near unanimous vote to rename the annual golf tournament and fundraiser, held during the NAB Show in Las Vegas, to the Philip J. Lombardo Charity Golf Tournament. The one “no” vote was cast by Lombardo.

Lombardo always knew he wanted to go into broadcasting. Growing up in a neighborhood on Chicago’s near north side, radio was his companion. He began his career at WBBM-TV in Chicago as a production assistant and quickly rose to executive levels, earning a reputation for being a ‘turnaround’ manager.

The majority of Lombardo’s storied career was focused on buying, turning around, and selling TV stations for his privately held company, Citadel Communications. In 2003, Lombardo was elected to serve as joint board chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters. He was inducted into the Broadcasting + Cable Hall of Fame in October 2015.

The Broadcasters Foundation has distributed more than $15 million dollars in aid over the past 20 years. This year, the foundation will award approximately $1.8 million. More information about the Broadcasters Foundation, including how to make a donation or apply for aid, is available at www.broadcastersfoundation.org, 212-373-8250, or info@thebfoa.org.

Hank Price

Working in television can be a great career, but launching that career usually means beginning with a low salary at a small station. This is true not just in news, but in virtually every other department.

Some of the better companies have begun to upgrade salaries, but the fact is that most of us came up in an era when starvation wages were the norm. In my case, it was several years before we stopped living hand to mouth.

I’d love to say everyone who “paid their dues” ended up with well-paying jobs, but that would be far from the truth. For each one of us who landed in good positions, there were dozens of others who never attained anything close to financial security.

No station owner wanted any of their employees to end up in poverty. The problem is that with approximately 210 television markets, the majority are small operations servicing small communities. There is simply not enough money coming in to pay large salaries.

Why then, you might wonder, didn’t underpaid staff members quit and find jobs in other industries. Many did, though making a mid-career change is easier said that done. Those that stayed the course did so because they loved the business. Like me, and maybe you, they couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

Looking back, I remember so many journeymen broadcasters who worked hard and contributed to the success of their stations but were still squeezed financially. Many of those folks are now retired, some with only Social Security to live on. They may be making it day-to-day, but when a major health emergency or other personal disaster happens, they sometimes have no place to turn. That’s when the Broadcasters Foundation of America can be there to help.

The problem is just as serious for broadcasters who spent their lives in radio. I have a number of friends from college who did that and some are still working past retirement age. They’ve had great careers serving their communities and loved every part of it except the financial struggle. Few have the reserves to handle a personal emergency. The Broadcasters Foundation helps them, too.

The foundation also aids broadcasters who have become sidelined because of a disability. I know of a photographer who had to have a leg amputated due to diabetes. The Broadcasters Foundation helped him recover, then continued to help for several years as he transitioned into a new career.

Over the years the Broadcaster’s Foundation of America has given millions in grants to our colleagues facing financial emergencies. In some cases, the foundation has been their last resort.

I’m sharing all of this because I believe those of us who have been well rewarded have an obligation to remember those who have not. That’s why for the past several years my wife and I have contributed to the Broadcaster’s Foundation of America. It’s not a lot, but the Foundation can use every dollar.

Please consider helping. Click on this link https://broadcastersfoundation.org and select the red “donate” button on the upper right side of the page. Give what you can, and please do it today.

The foundation is a 501c3 charity, which means your gift is tax deductible.

In conjunction with Nov. 28’s Giving Tuesday, a celebration of giving around the world, the Broadcasters Foundation of America is asking radio and television professionals to consider a tax-deductible donation that will help their colleagues in need. The Broadcasters Foundation, a 501c3 charity, provides financial assistance to people in radio or television who are in need due to a debilitating disease, accident, or disaster. Donations in any amount can be made here.

“Giving Tuesday is a perfect day to think of our colleagues who have fallen on challenging times,” said Tim McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Every week we receive more requests for aid, and we cannot turn our backs on our hard-working colleagues who life has dealt a difficult hand, leaving them in need of our help.”

“Funds can be depleted quickly when fighting an illness or recovering from an accident,” added Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Natural disasters have become more severe in recent years, and our one-time emergency fund has often helped our colleagues keep a roof over their heads. To continue providing this much-needed assistance, we need everyone in radio and television to come together for our colleagues in need.”

The Broadcasters Foundation has distributed more than $15 million in aid over the past 20 years. This year, it will award approximately $1.8 million. More information about the Broadcasters Foundation, including how to make a donation or apply for aid, is available at www.broadcastersfoundation.org, 212-373-8250 or info@thebfoa.org.

Jordan Wertlieb, Hearst executive vice president and chief operating officer, is the 2024 recipient of the Broadcasters Foundation of America Golden Mike Award. The award will be presented during a black-tie fundraiser on Monday, March 4, 2024, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. This year’s host, presenters, and performer will be announced shortly.

“I am honored by this recognition from the Board of the Broadcasters Foundation,” Wertlieb said. “The Broadcasters Foundation’s mission is to provide financial aid to our colleagues whose lives have been impacted by illness, accident, or natural disaster. I am committed to helping those in need and grateful to all who support this important organization.”

Wertlieb was promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer of Hearst in May 2023. He has been a member of the Hearst board of directors since 2013.

Previously, Wertlieb was a senior vice president of Hearst and president of Hearst Television since 2013, responsible for Hearst Television’s stations and digital properties (across 26 U.S. markets), two radio stations, and its production company, Hearst Media Production Group. During his tenure, Hearst Television expanded substantially in original television and digital programming, and its stations earned numerous regional and national journalism and community service honors.

Wertlieb is a member of the Broadcasters Foundation board of directors and currently serves as its vice chair.

“We’re proud to honor Jordan for his distinguished career, commitment to broadcasting, and dedication to the charitable mission of the Broadcasters Foundation,” said Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. “He is a staunch believer in top-quality content that audiences want.”

Tim McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation, said: “Jordan’s impressive career is matched only by his inspiring commitment to the Broadcasters Foundation. He gives his time and energy to advancing our cause, including attending our recent Media Mixer in New York City, an event designed for junior professionals in broadcasting to meet and network with top-level executives.”

In addition to the Broadcasters Foundation Board, Wertlieb serves on the Board of the National Association of Broadcasting’s (NAB) Leadership Foundation and is a member of the A+E Networks Board. In 2015, he was inducted into the Maryland D.C. Delaware Broadcasting Hall of Fame and, in 2018, to the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame. In 2021, he was recognized by the National Association of Television Program Executives with its Lew Klein Award for Leadership and by the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation for Lifetime Achievement during the LABF’s Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts awards ceremony.

The Broadcasters Foundation Golden Mike Award is presented annually to an individual for their excellence in and commitment to broadcasting, and their ongoing service to the community at large. The award ceremony and dinner attract a who’s who of broadcast media executives and celebrities.

Previous recipients include: Bob Pittman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of iHeartMedia; David Barrett, former President and Chief Executive Officer of Hearst Television; Perry Sook, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nexstar Media Group; Emily Barr, former President and Chief Executive Officer of Graham Media Group; Hilton Howell, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Gray Television; and Jack Abernethy, Chief Executive Officer of FOX Television Stations; among others.

The Broadcasters Foundation has distributed millions of dollars in aid to broadcasters who have lost their livelihood through a catastrophic event, debilitating disease or unforeseen tragedy. Personal donations can be made to the Foundation’s Guardian Fund. Corporate contributions are accepted through the Angel Initiative, and bequests can be made through the Foundation’s Legacy Society.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America (BFOA) has elected Adrienne Roark, president of content development and integration for CBS News and Stations, and CBS Media Ventures, to its board of directors. Roark was voted in during the BFOA’s recent board of directors’ meeting.

“We are excited to welcome Adrienne to our board of directors,” said Scott Herman, BFOA chairman. “Having another accomplished executive join our board is important as we extend awareness of our charitable mission to everyone in broadcasting. The Broadcasters Foundation is committed to communicating our charitable mission to everyone in television and radio through our very accomplished board of directors. Their efforts within their organizations enable us to help as many people as possible. Adrienne is clearly a leader who believes in that responsibility.”

Roark said: “I’m looking forward to working with Tim and the Board to find ways to bring help to more broadcasters who qualify. The Broadcasters Foundation is the only charity devoted exclusively to helping broadcasters in acute need. Joining the board is one way I can give back to this industry and support colleagues who need it most.”

Roark is a veteran television and news executive. Recently promoted to her current position, she oversees Paramount-Owned CBS Television Network stations in major markets on the East Coast and leads efforts to bring together content and teams in pursuit of audience reach and impact, industry leadership, and organizational effectiveness and efficiency.

Previously, Roark was president of CBS Stations and served in executive leadership positions at several stations in Portland, Ore. Her news background includes four years as VP and news director at CBS owned stations in Dallas-Fort Worth and news director in Miami. While in Miami, Roark created an award-winning investigative unit, worked closely with CBS News’ 60 Minutes on a Medicare fraud story, and was responsible for the first on-air news story shot entirely with an iPhone.

The Broadcasters Foundation’s board is composed of broadcast executives who are committed to “giving back” through the Broadcasters Foundation. The members of the board represent a wide array of broadcast and broadcast-related companies.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America has created Sips & Tips, the second event in its campaign to give young professionals networking access to top-level broadcast industry managers and executives.

Sips & Tips will take place during the Foundation’s Celebrity Golf Tournament & Fundraiser, Monday, Sept. 11, at the Greenwich (Conn.) Country Club. Sips & Tips begins at 3 p.m. with a two-hour golf lesson from a pro, followed by access to the invitation-only reception and dinner. The price to participate in Sip & Tips is $300.

“With these events, we open doors for junior professionals that can lead to long and fulfilling careers in broadcasting,” said Timothy McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. “We also bring awareness about our charitable mission to tomorrow’s broadcast leaders, helping to ensure that the Foundation will continue to provide aid for those in our business who need it most.”

Last month, the Broadcasters Foundation hosted a Media Mixer, its first event for junior professionals to network with on-air personalities and executives. Several attendees secured job interviews and at least one was offered a position.

“Young professionals entering our business need to know they can have a successful career in broadcasting by meeting those who have risen to the top,” McCarthy added.

The Broadcasters Foundation accepts personal donations to the Guardian Fund, corporate contributions to the Angel Initiative, and bequests through the Legacy Society. More than 150 broadcasters — from CEO’s to those just entering the business — turned out for The Broadcasters Foundation of America first Media Mixer at the New York City studios of iHeart Media. The event was hosted by nationally syndicated radio air personality Angela Yee, who was named Talent Ambassador for the charity that provides aid to broadcasters in acute need from illness, accident, or a disaster.

The Media Mixer gave up-and-coming professionals in broadcasting the opportunity to network with talent, managers and executives and brought awareness of the mission of the Broadcasters Foundation to those that are new to the industry.

“We are delighted with the large turnout of young professionals to last night’s event,” said Tim McCarthy, Broadcasters Foundation president. “We want to hold similar events in other markets. I want to thank members of our board, industry leaders and the talent who made themselves available to young professionals who are just beginning their broadcasting careers. A special thank you to Angela Yee for hosting the event and for taking on the role of Talent Ambassador.”

“I’m honored to be the Talent Ambassador for the Broadcasters Foundation,” Yee said. “Their mission is vital to those in our industry who have been hit by tragic circumstances. We need to make sure that everyone in the broadcast industry is aware of the foundation’s charitable purpose.”

Rounding out the evening was a performance by Yde. The Media Mixer was presented in part by industry sponsors Hearst, iHeart Radio, Katz Media, and the NY State Broadcasters Association.

Over its more than 70 years of existence, the Broadcasters Foundation has distributed millions of dollars in aid to broadcasters who have lost their livelihood through a catastrophic event, debilitating disease, or unforeseen tragedy.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America Giving Day is this Thursday, July 20, “a day for everyone in radio and television to come together as one community to support colleagues, across every position, in need of financial assistance due to critical illness, accident or disaster.”

The campaign also strives to raise awareness of the Broadcasters Foundation to ensure that anyone in radio and television who might qualify for aid knows about its charitable mission and can apply.

“Giving Day is an opportunity for everyone in radio and television to help our colleagues,” said Tim McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation. As broadcasters, we are storytellers. Whether behind the scenes in marketing, sales, or administration, part of the production team, or on-air talent, everyone in the radio and television broadcasting profession has a common goal: to share vital stories with their communities. But who is there to help these essential community members when a natural disaster strikes, or an illness disrupts a family’s financial security and safety? The Broadcasters Foundation of America’s unique mission is to support our professional community during these hard times, when our colleagues are unable to work and struggling to pay basic living expenses.”

To read what some of our recipients have said about the help they received — in their own words —click here.

“Support for the Broadcasters Foundation of America comes directly from within our broadcasting community,” said Scott Herman, chair of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Over the past 15 years, our grantmaking has increased dramatically, distributing $400,000 in 2007 to almost $2 million in 2022. We currently help an average of 400 broadcasters each year through our two grant programs. Our monthly grants support broadcasters on a continual basis while they recover from an illness or accident. Our emergency grants provide one-time financial aid following a devastating natural disaster or home emergency.

“I ask every broadcaster to please make a donation, in any amount, to help those in our industry who need it most,” McCarthy added.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America is launching a series of networking Media Mixers, with the first one scheduled for Thursday, July 20, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the New York City studios of iHeart Media. The event will be hosted by nationally syndicated radio air personality Angela Yee, who will be joined by other radio and TV on-air talent.

The purpose of the Media Mixers is twofold: to give up-and-coming professionals in broadcasting an opportunity to mix and mingle not only with their peers, but with talent, managers, and executives; and to increase their awareness of the Broadcasters Foundation charitable mission.

“We’re very excited about this new initiative,” said Tim McCarthy, President of the Broadcasters Foundation. “It’s imperative that we reach the next generation of broadcast industry leaders with our message of help and hope, while giving them an opportunity to network with higher level professionals who they may not otherwise have an opportunity to meet.”

The July Media Mixer is presented in part by industry sponsors Hearst, iHeart Radio, Katz Media and the NY State Broadcasters Association. The two-hour event is free, but space is limited, and advance registration is required. Registration is available on the Broadcasters Foundation website at www.broadcastersfoundation.org.

Richard E. Wiley, former chairman, commissioner, and general counsel of the FCC, and one of the country’s most prominent media and telecommunications lawyers, has been chosen as the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient by the Broadcasters Foundation of America.

The Lifetime Achievement Award honors an individual who has made invaluable contributions to the television and radio industries and will be presented to Wiley during the Golden Mike Award gala on Monday, March 6, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The annual event is a major fundraiser for the Broadcasters Foundation, the only charity devoted exclusively to helping broadcasters in acute need.

“Dick’s commitment to fight for our industry in Washington has given broadcasters the opportunity to grow their business,” stated Scott Herman, BFOA chairman. “His strong belief in our industry has extended to his support of the mission of the Broadcasters Foundation to help those in our business who need it most. We are honored to present him with the Lifetime Achievement Award.”

“I am honored to receive this Lifetime Achievement Award from the Broadcasters Foundation,” Wiley said. “Since arriving at the FCC more than 50 years ago, and co-founding our D.C. law firm almost 40 years ago, it’s been a privilege to work with broadcasters on landmark innovations including the development of high-definition TV. I’m proud to be a part of this great industry’s evolution, and to support the foundation’s mission of providing a critical safety net for members of the broadcast profession.”

During his tenure at the FCC from 1970 to 1977, Wiley fostered increased competition and lessened regulation in the communications field. As chair of the FCC’s Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Service, from 1987 to 1995, he played a pivotal role in the development of HDTV, for which he received an Emmy Award.

“Dick has been a driving force in the advancement of the broadcast industry for both radio and television,” said Tim McCarthy, BFOA president. “His achievements have allowed our industry to remain competitive in the ever-evolving media landscape, and we are delighted to recognize him for his many accomplishments.”

Wiley is currently chairman emeritus of the law firm he co-founded, Wiley Rein, which includes a premiere telecom, media and technology practice and is celebrating its 40th year.  He is credited with nurturing generations of legal talent and has received numerous accolades throughout his storied career, including being named a Washington “Visionary” by the National Law Journal, the “most influential media and telecommunications lawyer in the United States” by the International Herald Tribune, one of the top “100 Men of the Century” by Broadcasting + Cable, and the “Father of High-Definition” television by The Globe and Mail. He was honored by the Broadcasters Foundation in 2014 with the Lowry Mays Excellence in Broadcasting Award.

Wiley joins broadcast luminaries Lesley Visser, Charles Osgood, George Beasley, Ed McLaughlin, and Dick Clark, as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. As previously announced, Jack Abernethy, CEO of Fox Television Stations, will be the 2023 honoree of the Broadcasters Foundation of America Golden Mike Award.

For more than 70 years, the Broadcasters Foundation has provided aid ranging from medical care to financial assistance, whether it be monthly assistance from life-altering circumstances or a one-time emergency grant to help victims of natural disasters.  This year, the foundation will give away more than $1.8 million in monthly and emergency grants, including $85,000 to hurricane victims this fall.

Katz has been a longtime champion of the Broadcasters Foundation. Now in its 12th year, all money raised during Katz’s annual two-week campaign goes toward the Stu Olds Memorial Fund that commemorates Katz’s former CEO and directly helps a broadcasting colleague in need. Olds, as well as Katz’s current CEO, Mark Gray, and Leo MacCourtney, president of Katz Television Group, have served on the foundation’s board of directors.

“As a longstanding board member, I have seen first-hand how the money raised helps broadcasters facing challenging times. I’m incredibly proud of the enormous generosity of the Katz team and their continued support to honor Stu’s legacy and give back to those in our industry who need it most,” said Mark Gray, chief executive officer of Katz Media Group.

Leo MacCourtney, president of Katz Television Group, added: “As a board member, I strongly believe in the foundation’s mission to help broadcasters who have fallen on hard times. The Katz team has been a tremendous supporter of the foundation, and we are proud to continue that tradition.”

Tim McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation of America, said: “I can’t thank the wonderful employees of Katz enough for their steadfast commitment to the foundation. The management team at Katz is truly committed to supporting broadcasters in need.”

The Broadcasters Foundation of America kicks off its annual year-end giving campaign this week. The appeal asks for tax-deductible donations to provide financial assistance to people in broadcasting whose lives have been shattered by debilitating illness, accident, or catastrophe.

“Our grantees are your colleagues,” said Tim McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation. “They are hard-working men and women who through no fault of their own need our help. Requests for aid continue to increase every year. We cannot turn our backs on those in our industry who need our help.”

This year, the Broadcasters Foundation will award close to $2 million in monthly and one-time emergency grants. Since 2017, monthly grants have increased 70% and more than 600 emergency grants have been awarded. Over the past 20 years, the Broadcasters Foundation has distributed more than $15 million to broadcasters in need.

“Disaster often strikes without notice and extreme circumstances can deplete a life’s savings quickly,” said Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation board of directors. “We need everyone in radio and TV to spread the word about the foundation’s charitable mission across their station and company, in case they or someone they know needs our help.”

More information, including how to make a personal or corporate donation or apply for aid is available here, and by contacting the foundation at 212-373-8250 or here.

Jim Thompson, the Broadcasters Foundation of America’s longtime president and veteran broadcaster, died Aug. 14 of throat cancer in Summit, N.J. He was 75.

“I am very proud to have known Jim for nearly 40 years as a colleague and a friend,” said Scott Herman, the foundation’s chairman. “Jim believed deeply in helping others and his passion and enthusiasm for life always lit up a room. Broadcasting has lost a great man, who always saw the positive in every person and every situation. He will be sorely missed.”

Thompson took over the reins of the Broadcasters Foundation in 2009, guiding the charitable organization to more than quadruple the amount of financial aid it distributes to radio and TV professionals from $400,000 to nearly $2 million last year.

“When the board of directors was searching for a president, Jim’s reputation as a leader combined with his compassion for others and his ability to rally people together made him the perfect choice,” said Phil Lombardo, chairman emeritus of the Broadcasters Foundation. “His accomplishments over the past 13 years helped the many TV and Radio professionals who found themselves in unthinkable circumstances and in need of aid. Our sincere sympathies go out to his family.”

Last October, Thompson announced he would be retiring at the end of 2022. Thompson had been president and CEO of Group W Radio, the second largest radio company in the country during his leadership, and along with Mike Craven was co-owner of Liberty Broadcasting, a 19-station radio group concentrated on the East Coast. He began his broadcasting career as an account executive at KYW-TV Philadelphia in 1971, where he rose to vice president and general manager.

An innovator and visionary, Thompson created the Radio-Mercury Awards to encourage and reward excellence in radio creative. He served on the boards of the Radio Advertising Bureau and the Advertising Council, was vice chairman of the Pennsylvania State Broadcasters Association and a member of numerous committees, including the NAB Radio Futures Committee.

Thompson was named “Radio Executive to Watch” by Advertising Age, “Radio Executive of the Year” and “One of the Most Influential People in Radio” by Radio Ink magazine, where he also appeared on the cover numerous times. A member of the U.S. Army, Thompson served in Vietnam.

NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt said: “Jim Thompson’s illustrious career in broadcasting and legacy of service to the industry had a resounding impact. His boundless generosity and passionate leadership of the Broadcasters Foundation helped countless broadcasters overcome adversity and persevere in their darkest moments. NAB extends our deepest condolences to Jim’s family and all whose lives he touched.”

Thompson is survived by his wife Cindy, his five children: Meghan Cima, Shannon Gardiner and her husband James, Katie McElwee and her husband Tommy, James Thompson and his wife Madison, Molly Thompson, seven grandchildren and his brothers John and Thomas.

The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Jim Thompson Memorial Fund, which has been established by the Broadcasters Foundation in honor of Thompson’s dedication and service to the broadcasting industry and to the foundation’s charitable cause of providing financial aid to radio and TV professionals in acute need. Adams Radio Group has launched a voluntary employee donation drive to help create awareness and raise funds for the Broadcasters Foundation of America, a 501(c)3 charity that provides aid to fellow broadcasters in acute need from life-altering illness, accident, or other disaster. The plan allows all Adams Radio Group employees the opportunity to set up automatic payroll deductions, in any amount, as donations to the Broadcasters Foundation.

“When I learned that the sole mission of the Broadcasters Foundation is to provide financial assistance to our colleagues who, through no fault of their own, are in desperate need, I knew we had to get involved,” said Ron Stone, president of Adams Media Group and president and executive director of the Independent Broadcasters Association. “These broadcasters are our colleagues. I would ask every radio group to consider helping the only charity that is dedicated solely to helping our colleagues.”

Tim McCarthy, co-president of the Broadcasters Foundation, said: “We want to make sure everyone in broadcast radio and television is aware of our mission so they can reach out for help if they, or anyone they know, has been impacted by life-altering circumstances that has left them in great need of our support.”

“We’re very grateful to Ron for launching a voluntary employee donation drive to benefit the mission of the Broadcasters Foundation. With help from broadcasters like Ron, we can continue to provide aid to those in our industry who need it most,” added Jim Thompson, co-president of the Broadcasters Foundation.

Leaders of the TV and radio industries gathered in New York Monday to celebrate the achievements of two of their own while reflecting, in the shadow of a receding pandemic, the resilience of their business.

In the limelight at the annual Broadcasters Foundation’s Golden Mike Awards dinner were legendary sportscaster Leslie Visser, who received the organization’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award, and Hilton Howell, chairman, president and CEO of Gray Television, who accepted the organization’s 2022 Golden Mike Award.

The glittering event, held as always at the Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, was for many the first opportunity to dress up, abandon Zoom screens and come together in person since March of 2020, when a pandemic transformed lives and their way of operating at work. Tales of missing shoes, overly snug dresses and forgotten accessories abounded as people laughed and reunited to catch up and talk shop.

About 250 people were in attendance and the foundation raised $300,000 to aid its longtime efforts to “to improve the quality of life and maintain the personal dignity of men and women in the radio and television broadcast profession who find themselves in acute financial need due to a critical illness, accident, advanced age or other serious misfortune.”

Visser, who began her career as a sportswriter at the Boston Globe and then moved into broadcasting, regaled the crowd with tales of making her way as a pioneering woman in a male-dominated profession. Realizing she wouldn’t be allowed into the locker room for post-game interviews in her early days, she headed for the parking lot, where she waited for players to emerge and secured interviews.

Later, after becoming the first woman to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the first woman to report from the Super Bowl sidelines and the first woman to cover the NFL as a beat, she recalled her mother’s early advice in the title of her memoir, Sometimes You Have to Cross When it Says Don’t Walk.

Howell, who acquired Gray Television in 1993 and gradually built it from a small-market specialist into the second largest TV station group in the U.S., reminded his audience of the industry’s profound staying power.

“Who could have written the script of the past two years?” he asked. As stations “broadcast from people’s dining rooms and anchors presented from their back yards,” the industry served its audiences and “reasserted its local connection with our communities.”

“That connection has always saved us,” said Howell, who grew up in Waco, Texas, as the son of a station owner. “I heard from childhood about how the sky is falling in local TV, that the arrival of the remote control and later the arrival of streaming would be an extinction event for local broadcasting. Yet here we are.”

“Good local broadcasting gets results,” Howell said. “We innovate and collaborate to create compelling content, to inform, engage and protect our communities.

“We seek solutions,” he continued. “We do in fact change the world for the better… and despite all the Chicken Littles out there, the sky is still pretty darn blue.”

The Broadcasters Foundation of America provides grants to people in the industry who fall upon hard times due to disease, disaster or other unforeseen circumstances. It provides an anonymous safety net in cases of critical illness, death of a spouse, advanced age or serious misfortune. To learn more and make a donation, click here.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America says it has achieved a rating of 100 from Charity Navigator, a nonprofit evaluator. The evaluation process takes place over a seven-year period and uses Charity Navigator’s Encompass Rating System.

The Broadcasters Foundation received a score of 100 in Finance & Accountability, reflecting its solid financial health (stability, efficiency and sustainability) and commitment to governance practices and policies.

In addition, the Broadcasters Foundation also received full credit at 72% for its Program Expense Ratio, which measures the percent of total expenses spent on the programs and services it exists to deliver.

“We are very proud to receive this high level of accreditation from Charity Navigator,” said Jim Thompson, BFOA co-president. “We have worked diligently to maximize our budget to provide the aid that so many in our industry desperately need. Life-altering illness or accident can devastate a family’s financial situation, and the Broadcasters Foundation is committed to easing that strain for our colleagues who qualify.”

BFOA has distributed millions of dollars in aid to broadcasters who have lost their livelihood through a catastrophic event, debilitating disease or unforeseen tragedy.

Lesley Visser, the only sportscaster — male or female — to have worked on the network broadcasts of the Final Four, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA Finals, the Triple Crown, the Olympics, the U.S. Open and the World Figure Skating Championship, will be the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the Broadcasters Foundation of America (BFOA). The award will be presented during the Golden Mike Award gala and fundraiser, which will be held on Monday, March 14, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

“Lesley has an extraordinary number of ‘firsts’ in her accomplished and impressive career,” said BFCA Chairman Scott Herman. “We’re very proud to recognize her many accomplishments, not only as a pioneering female sportscaster, but as a prominent leader in sports broadcasting, overall.”

Voted the No. 1 Female Sportscaster of All-Time by the National Sportscasters of America, Visser is in seven Halls of Fame, was named a Muhammad Ali “Daughter of Greatness,” and won Billie Jean King’s only “Outstanding Journalist Award.” She is the first woman to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the first woman to report from a Super Bowl sideline, the first woman on Monday Night Football and the only woman to have presented the Championship Lombardi Trophy at the Super Bowl.

She was the first woman NFL analyst in both radio and TV, and the first female sportscaster to carry the Olympic Torch.  Her assignments have taken her from interviewing Yao Ming in Shanghai to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In the mid-1970s, Visser was the first woman to cover the NFL as a beat when she wrote for the Boston Globe, at a time when the credentials said, “No Women or Children in the Press Box.” She is the first woman to win the Sports Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award and is the first woman to win the BFOA Lifetime Achievement.  In her 45-year career, Visser has worked for the Boston Globe, CBS, ABC, ESPN, HBO and Westwood One Radio.

“I am enormously honored to be recognized by the Broadcasters Foundation of America, which is vital to our colleagues who find themselves in need of help during times of unimaginable hardship,” Visser said. “It’s essential that we acknowledge and support such a charitable endeavor.”

Visser joins broadcast luminaries Charles Osgood, George Beasley, Ed McLaughlin, Dick Clark, and Bill Hoffman as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. As previously announced, Hilton H. Howell, Jr., chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Gray Television and Atlantic American Corp., is the recipient of the 2022 Golden Mike Award.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America has chosen Hilton H. Howell Jr., chairman and CEO of Gray Television and Atlantic American Corp., as the recipient of its 2022 Golden Mike Award. Presented during a black-tie gala on Monday, March 14, 2022, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, this year’s event marks the return of the foundation’s biggest fundraiser, which did not take place in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Broadcasters Foundation is the only charity devoted exclusively to providing financial assistance to colleagues in broadcasting who are in dire need. Even with the loss of major fundraising events during COVID, more than $1.8 million in monthly and one-time emergency grants will be awarded this year.

“It’s been a challenging year-and-a-half, and we are thrilled to honor Hilton and once again present the Golden Mike Award live and in-person,” said Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Looking ahead, our goal remains to provide financial aid for every broadcaster who qualifies.”

“The Broadcasters Foundation is often a lifeline for our colleagues,” said Howell, who also serves on the foundation’s board of directors. “I am honored to be recognized by the Broadcasters Foundation and ask everyone in our business who has made a good living from broadcasting, to consider donating any amount to help our colleagues who have been hit by shattering circumstances.”

Howell is a highly respected broadcaster with more than 25 years of experience in broadcasting. He began his career practicing law and spent several years in the insurance industry.

In addition to serving on the Broadcasters Foundation’s board, he is a former member of the board of directors of the National Association of Broadcasters, the advisory council of the Center for Leadership and Ethics for the University of Texas at Austin and the advisory board of Curant Health Care. The Broadcasters Foundation of America on Wednesday announced that Katz Media Group has raised nearly $45,000 for the foundation during its 11th annual company-wide membership drive, bringing the total amount Katz has donated over the past 11 years to nearly $400,000.

All money raised during Katz’s annual two-week campaign goes toward the foundation’s Stu Olds Memorial Fund that commemorates Katz’s former CEO and supports the foundation’s mission to provide support to broadcast professionals in acute need.

For more than 70 years, the Broadcasters Foundation has provided aid ranging from medical care to financial assistance to broadcasters and their families across the United States. This year, the foundation will give away more than $1.8 million in monthly and emergency grants, including victims of natural disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires.

Katz has been a longtime champion of the Broadcasters Foundation. Olds, as well as Katz’s current CEO, Mark Gray, have served on the foundation’s board of directors, and Leo MacCourtney, president of Katz Television Group, is the current vice president and treasurer.

“As a longstanding board member, I have seen first-hand how the money raised helps broadcasters in need. I’m incredibly proud of the continued generosity of the Katz team to continue this tradition to honor Stu’s legacy and give back to our industry,” said Gray.

MacCourtney added: “As a current officer of the foundation, I strongly believe in their mission to help broadcasters who have fallen on hard times. The Katz team has been a tremendous supporter for the foundation, and we are proud to continue that legacy.”

“We are grateful to Mark, Leo, Christine Travaglini and the entire team at Katz for their continued support of our charitable cause,” said Jim Thompson, co-president of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. “Our purpose at the foundation is to provide aid to those in our industry who need it most, whether it be monthly assistance from life-altering circumstances or a one-time emergency grant to help victims of natural disasters. With the help from our friends and colleagues at Katz, we can help more broadcasters in need across the country.”

The Broadcasters Foundation of America kicks off its annual year-end giving campaign today, with an appeal for tax-deductible donations that will allow the Foundation to continue providing financial assistance to those in broadcasting who need it most. A 501(c)3 charity, the Broadcasters Foundation is the only organization dedicated exclusively to delivering financial aid to broadcasters and their families whose lives have been upended by tragic illness, accident, or catastrophe. Personal donations to the Guardian Fund and corporate contributions to the Angel Initiative can be made at www.broadcastersfoundation.org/donate.

This year’s plea for donations follows a year-and-a-half of several canceled fundraising events due to the COVID 19 pandemic, even as more broadcasters than ever are reaching out for monthly or emergency relief.

The Broadcasters Foundation will award more than $1.8 million in monthly and one-time emergency grants in 2021. Monthly grants have increased 75% and more than 500 emergency grants have been awarded since 2017. Over the past 20 years, the Broadcasters Foundation has distributed more than $15 million to broadcasters in need.

“Our grant recipients are hard-working broadcasters from across the country and from all size markets, who have been hit by challenging, often life-altering circumstances,” said Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. “With the support and generosity of the people in our industry, we can help your colleagues and their families get through their toughest times.”

“Requests for assistance have escalated at a significant rate over the past several years,” said Jim Thompson, co-president of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Combined with the cancellation of several fundraising events due to the pandemic, personal and corporate donations are vital to continuing our charitable mission of disbursing financial aid to those in your industry who need it most.”

Co-President of the Broadcasters Foundation Tim McCarthy, added, “As I become more involved with the day-to-day operations of the Broadcasters Foundation, I am in awe of the generosity of those in our business who give back by supporting our mission. I would ask everyone who has not contributed in the past to please join our cause and help your colleagues in need.”

Since its inception, the Broadcasters Foundation has distributed millions of dollars to thousands of needy broadcasters and their families. Individual donations can be made to the Guardian Fund, corporate contributions are accepted through the Angel Initiative, and bequests can be arranged through the Legacy Society. To learn more or to donate, please contact the Broadcasters Foundation at 212-373-8250 or info@thebfoa.org or visit www.broadcastersfoundation.org.

Broadcasting veteran Jim Thompson, president of the Broadcasters Foundation of America since 2009, has announced his retirement at the end of 2022. In conjunction with that announcement, the Broadcasters Foundation has unveiled a succession plan whereby Thompson and broadcast veteran Tim McCarthy will serve as co-presidents through 2022, at which time Thompson will move into an active consultancy role.

The search committee unanimously chose McCarthy as the best candidate for the position, and the board of directors unanimously endorsed him and the succession plan. The announcement came from Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation, and goes into effect Nov. 1.

Thompson (l) and McCarthy

“I have known Tim for almost 20 years,” Herman said. “He is an outstanding leader and I look forward to working with him and Jim for a seamless transition. “Jim has done a phenomenal job getting the word out about our mission and increasing the number of broadcasters we help. The entire board and I are delighted that he will remain with the foundation as co-president and then as a consultant.”

“Serving the mission of the Broadcasters Foundation has been the most rewarding experience of my career,” Thompson said. “I cannot think of a more worthy task then helping our colleagues in their darkest moments. The search committee and the board have made an excellent choice in Tim — I know I will be leaving our mission in good hands.”

Chairman Emeritus Phil Lombardo said: “I worked with the search committee 12 years ago to bring Jim onboard, and I am pleased to again have worked with the current search committee to identify Tim as the best person to take on our mission of helping broadcasters in acute need.”

“I look forward to working with Jim and the entire board to continue the important work of the Broadcasters Foundation,” McCarthy said. “I have been in broadcasting throughout my career, and it is an honor to be in a position to give back by providing aid to those in our industry who need it most.”

McCarthy most recently was ESPN/Walt Disney Co.’s senior vice president and general manager of audio play-by-play and general manager of New York and Los Angeles radio. He joined ESPN in 1998 as general manager and president of WABC/Radio Disney/ESPN. McCarthy began his career in radio at WABC-AM New York in 1990.

A philanthropist who gives back to the broadcast industry and the community, he has been recognized as Man of the Year by The Epilepsy Society of New York (2004) and received Disney’s Points of Light Volunteer Service Award (2014). He has conducted fundraisers for numerous charitable causes, including The Chris McCarthy Golf Outing, which raises money for kids with epilepsy, and served as The Voice of 9/11 Dinner chair.

Thompson is well-known across the broadcast industry. During his 40-plus year career, he was president of Westinghouse Broadcasting’s radio division, president and co-owner of Liberty Radio Group and general manager of KYW-TV Philadelphia.

Kathleen Kirby

Kathleen A. Kirby was voted secretary and general counsel to the Broadcasters Foundation of America during today’s virtual meeting of the board of directors. Kirby, who is a partner with the Washington law firm Wiley Rein and co-chair of the firm’s Telecom, Media & Technology group, takes over secretary and general counsel duties from Richard Bodorff, who will remain on the board.

Kirby’s practice involves advising some of the country’s largest media groups on regulatory and policy matters, representing radio and television stations in connection with the full realm of FCC compliance, and counseling clients on the sale and acquisition of broadcast properties.

“It’s an honor to follow Dick in the roles of secretary and general counsel for the Broadcasters Foundation,” said Kirby. “I’ve been a supporter of the Broadcasters Foundation, and I look forward to giving back even more by donating my time and energy to continuing the crucial mission of providing aid to those in our industry who need it most.”

“Kathy’s advice will guide us on the many legal and regulatory issues of our 501(c)3 charity,” said Chairman of the Board Scott Herman. “We’re grateful she will join us in her new capacity as the board continues to put our time and energy into raising money to help our colleagues in need. I also want to thank Dick for his many years of service as secretary and general counsel. We’re delighted that he will remain on the board.”

Kirby has long served as counsel to the Radio Television Digital News Association, advising electronic journalists on a variety of legal and legislative matters, including freedom of information, privacy, libel, content regulation, copyright, and other First Amendment issues.  She is an inductee of the National Freedom of Information Hall of Fame and recipient of RTDNA’s First Amendment Leadership Award. Kirby is regularly rated by Chambers USA as one of Washington’s “Leading Lawyers” in her field and has been recognized by Law 360 as a Legal MVP.

Before attending law school, Kirby worked for almost a decade as a radio broadcaster in her native New York and in Connecticut, where she gained extensive experience first as a reporter and news anchor, then in management positions in operations, sales, and marketing.

Kirby obtained her J.D. degree as a Dean’s Scholar from the Catholic University of America, where she served as executive editor of the Catholic University Law Review. She received her bachelor’s degree in accounting and marketing from the University of Virginia, where she was instrumental in founding one of the country’s first student-owned and operated commercial radio stations.  She continues to advise WUVA-FM as a member of the station’s alumni interest group.

Kirby serves on the Media Institute’s First Amendment Advisory Counsel and is an active member of both the Federal Communications Bar Association and the American Bar Association’s Forum on Communications Law and has held leadership positions within both throughout her career, including in governance, as chair of the FCBA Foundation, and as chair of the annual Representing Your Local Broadcaster program at the NAB Show.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America is providing emergency aid to broadcast colleagues who have been hit hard by the recent extreme weather conditions in Texas and the surrounding states. More than 20 requests have come in over the past six days from employees of Tegna, Nexstar, Radio One, Entercom, Fox and more, with the first of those checks going out to qualifying individuals yesterday (Feb 24).

“Broken pipes, power outages, displacement, and more have brought devastation to many of our colleagues,” said Peter Doyle, vice president of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. “The Foundation’s Emergency Grant Program is set up with a streamlined vetting process that allows us to move quickly and get checks to those in desperate need. We’re asking every broadcaster in affected areas to help us get the word out to those who may need our assistance.”

Broadcasters interested in applying for aid may visit the Apply for Aid section of the Broadcasters Foundation website here and select Emergency Grants on the right, which will take them to the Emergency Grant & Disaster Information Request Form.

The Broadcasters Foundation has disbursed more than $1 million to qualifying broadcasters through its Emergency Grant Program. One-time emergency grants are awarded for up to $2,000 each to qualifying broadcasters recovering from a natural disaster, such as hurricanes, tornados, fires, floods, or other serious misfortune.

The Broadcasters Foundation of America launches its annual year-end giving campaign today, appealing to those in the broadcast industry for tax-deductible personal donations to its Guardian Fund and corporate contributions to the Angel Initiative.

The Broadcasters Foundation is a 501(c)3 charity and the only organization dedicated exclusively to providing aid to broadcasters and their families whose lives have been upended by tragic illness, accident, or catastrophe. Donations can be made by visiting www.broadcastersfoundation.org/donate.

The annual Giving Campaign comes as more broadcasters than ever before are reaching out for monthly or emergency relief. This year, the Broadcasters Foundation will award more than $1.7 million in monthly and one-time emergency grants. Monthly grants have increased over 79% since 2016, and more than 500 emergency grants have been awarded since 2017. Over the past 20 years, the Broadcasters Foundation has distributed over $13 million to broadcasters in need.

“Our only goal at the Broadcasters Foundation is to provide aid to those in our industry who need it most,” said Scott Herman, chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation of America. “Our grant recipients are hard-working broadcasters from across the country, who have been hit by challenging, often life-altering circumstances. Together, we can help them get through the toughest times.”

“We have seen requests for assistance escalate at a significant rate over the past several years,” said Jim Thompson, president of the Broadcasters Foundation. “I ask every broadcaster to consider a tax-deductible contribution to help us continue our mission of providing aid to colleagues who are desperate and dire need.”

The Broadcasters Foundation of America has canceled its annual Celebrity Golf Tournament Fundraiser due to safety concerns because of coronavirus.

The cancellation comes just a few months after the charity for broadcasters in need canceled the Philip J. Lombardo Golf Tournament, another of its big fundraisers, which traditionally is held in conjunction with the NAB Show in Las Vegas. The two fundraisers, along with smaller events, generate more than $450,000 a year. To counter the losses, the Broadcasters Foundation has launched a plea for donations.

“Our colleagues who find themselves in acute need due to a debilitating illness or accident need our help,” said Broadcasters Foundation Chair Scott Herman. “This year, we are helping more broadcasters than ever before, and it’s imperative that we continue to do so. We cannot turn our backs on our colleagues.”

“We have three major fundraisers a year, and the golf tournaments are two of them,” explained Jim Thompson, President of the Broadcasters Foundation. “Our grant recipients worked at radio or television stations in markets across America. I ask everyone whose career is built on broadcasting to consider donating to help offset the losses of our canceled fundraising events.”

Anyone interested in making a donation or in learning more about the Broadcasters Foundation of America can visit www.broadcastersfoundation.org, or contact the Broadcasters Foundation directly at 212-373-8250 or info@thebfoa.org.

The Broadcasters Foundation has distributed millions of dollars in aid to broadcasters who have lost their livelihood through a catastrophic event, debilitating disease or unforeseen tragedy. Personal donations can be made to the Foundation’s Guardian Fund, corporate contributions are accepted through the Angel Initiative, and bequests can be made through the Foundation’s Legacy Society.
