Sinclair Shutters Five News Markets: ‘We Just Turned Off The Lights For Many’

Sinclair stations in Ohio, Oregon, Nebraska, Florida and Iowa were given notice last week that their news operations will be shutting down imminently. “Information is power, and we just turned the lights off for many,” said one fired employee.

WNWO Toledo Ending Local Newscasts In May

Beginning May 15, Sinclair’s NBC affiliate will replace local newscasts with Sinclair’s The National Desk. WNWO shifted production of its local newscasts in 2017 to a sister station in South Bend, Ind., and anchors were no longer based in Toledo.

Sinclair says all of the local news at its Toledo, Ohio, NBC affiliate “will continue to be covered by local reporters and will be produced in Toledo,” but the technical aspects of the newscast will be handled by staff at Sinclair’s WSBT South Bend, Ind., which will also take over master control. The Toledo Blade reports the move will result in layoffs.

Ohio NBC affiliates have partnered to present the first televised statewide debate of Issue 2, a referendum on a controversial new law that made changes to a variety of government laws and policies.The debate from Columbus on Oct. 25 will be carried live on WDTN Dayton, WCMH Columbus, WLWT Cincinnati, WKYC Cleveland, WLIO Lima, WNWO Toledo, WTOV Wheeling-Steubenville, WFMJ Youngstown and WHIZ Zanesville. It will also be streamed live on each of the station’s websites.
