The reality is that more people are consuming local news content across more hours and across additional station platforms. Station websites have become the online choice for local news and weather. And, possibly the most significant expansion of on-demand news is now underway with direct broadcasting to mobile screens — mobile DTV.
Post-‘Oprah’ Newscasts: So Far, So Good
Most of the seven top-25 stations that filled the 4 p.m. time period left by Oprah‘s departure with local newscasts report they’re pleased with their performance so far in this new TV season. Three are holding their top positions in household ratings, and at least two more are leading their markets in key demos. Here’s a first look at how the newscasts are doing.
A new report from the Pew Research Center reaffirms that TV is still the most popular local medium overall. Viewers primarily tune in for just three things: weather, breaking news, and traffic. But the study also notes TV “might easily be replaced by mobile platforms that are even more accessible than TV.”

This January, after the Tribune-owned Fox affiliate in Indianapolis expands its weekend morning news shows by an hour, the station will be airing 54 1/2 hours of live local news each week. And if everything goes as planned, by the end of 2012 it will add a 6-7 p.m. newscast weekdays, bringing the total to an astonishing 59 1/2 hours.
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal’s pride in his office’s ability to bypass traditional media to get his message out via social media is just one point of contention putting Deal and the local media at odds. “There’s no group of editors or news directors who can prevent me from communicating directly with a mass audience,” Deal reportedly said at a recent gala.
