And, possibly the most significant expansion of on-demand news is now underway with direct broadcasting to mobile screens — mobile DTV.

Post-‘Oprah’ Newscasts: So Far, So Good

Most of the seven top-25 stations that filled the 4 p.m. time period left by Oprah‘s departure with local newscasts report they’re pleased with their performance so far in this new TV season. Three are holding their top positions in household ratings, and at least two more are leading their markets in key demos. Here’s a first look at how the newscasts are doing.

Pew: Local TV News Faces Mobile Threat

A new report from the Pew Research Center reaffirms that TV is still the most popular local medium overall. Viewers primarily tune in for just three things: weather, breaking news, and traffic. But the study also notes TV “might easily be replaced by mobile platforms that are even more accessible than TV.”

Have Local Newscasts Become Game Shows?

Look around the local news landscape, and you’ll see a trend in cutesie names, visual tricks and, darn it, even voice-overs telling viewers what’s coming up next. A Steady Hand Guiding ABC’s Sales

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal’s pride in  his office’s ability to bypass traditional media to get his message out via social media is just one point of contention putting Deal and the local media at odds. “There’s no group of editors or news directors who can prevent me from communicating directly with a mass audience,” Deal reportedly said at a recent gala.

Stations Missing Mobile Opportunity In Apps

If broadcasters really want to own mobile, they need to harness and harvest consumers’ infatuation with constantly having their smartphones in hand, writes Neal Augenstein. The reporter and tech editor for WTOP-FM Washington says his own attempt was through an engagement app that lets people listen to the station and browse its site with easy UGC opportunities.
