Comment on Study: TV & Radio Broadcasters Significant Contributors To Nation’s Economy by AIMTV https://tvnewscheck.com/business/article/study-tv-radio-broadcasters-significant-contributors-to-nations-economy/#comment-127826 Fri, 05 Jan 2024 16:00:23 +0000 https://tvnewscheck.com/?p=304990#comment-127826 Indeed, broadcasters benefit the U.S. economy and society, especially compared to their counterparts in cable & social media. But there is room for improvement. AM (and some FM) Talk radio and so-called “religious” radio/TV stations in various markets often spread misinformation, disinformation, and political propaganda without a modicum of FCC oversight. In most cases, the so-called “religious” channels are thinly veiled political propaganda outlets that peddle their messages and avoid taxation—a literal wolf in sheep’s clothing. You cannot, or should not, be having it both ways. Also, FCC rules must be updated to reflect reality for required E/I programming, which is an open joke. If so many kids and teens are being served, why are all the ads targeted to old people?

And NAB will go to the courts which will be years before there is a final ruling. The 3 FCC members don’t care about local TV stations if they did they would relax the rules.

A vast wasteland that only looked like news. This current controversy is not about news, it is about greed and eliminating the competition via government regulators. Can anyone tell me what will happen to the local stations who would lose their network affiliations?

I am a proud Trump supporter, but the Dems at the FCC are right on this one.

The Internet came along and effectively eliminated classified ads as a solid revenue source. The newspaper industry managed to survive by adapting and evolving to the changing times. Yes, the industry took a beating, and many newspapers closed altogether. However, others saw the future of digital news and went with it.

What has the broadcast industry done to evolve with the changing times? Very little. You can have all the outstanding journalism on TV you want. But that doesn’t matter if nobody bothers to watch TV. Digital news and streaming video are the future. But the broadcast industry is hesitant to plan for the future because it is too focused on short-term profits that won’t last.

That’s the broadcast industry’s fault, not the FCC’s.

As I said in the piece, in their heyday, monopoly newspapers enriched their owners and the public through outstanding journalism. And I believe in incrementalism. You don’t have to lift the local ownership cap in its entirety. How about allowing just common ownership of two stations per market?

I know many people here at TVNewsCheck want to blame that big evil FCC for the industry’s woes, but broadcasting companies deserve even more blame than some of you will publicly admit.

Broadcasting companies are focused on short-term profits and not long-term vision. Why else did companies like Nexstar buy so many TV stations over the past decade? To serve the public interest? Of course not! They wanted more leverage in order to squeeze more retransmission fees out of cable and satellite TV companies. Cord cutters have put that very revenue model in jeopardy. Even some smaller cable television companies are getting out of the business.

What’s going to happen when the retransmission fees dry up? I don’t think the broadcasting industry has an answer. I think the current industry executives are happy to keep kicking the can until they exit the business with a golden parachute and make the issue someone else’s problem. The result is an industry that is stuck to its old ways while everyone else is zipping off to the future. Broadcasters failed to innovate and remain relevant in a digital age. That’s not the FCC’s fault.

Sorry that the rules don’t serve your ability to make money anymore, but that’s sour grapes. Consumers have moved on from broadcast. And that’s 100% on broadcasters and their affiliates running short-term profit strategies instead of giving consumers what they want.

Not allowing broadcast and newspapers to be co-owned killed the newspaper industry. The loss of newspaper journalism has weakened democracy, the FCC has weakened democracy again. Soon we will only have FOX News, MSNBC, CNN and social media to rely on and that will be the saddest day. Hopefully congress will override the FCC’s disastrous decision.

We’ve had 15-20 years of breakneck consolidation, fueled by pure speculation that the FCC didn’t intend to enforce rules already on the books. During this time, broadcasting companies have used every loophole to gain advantage to focus on exploiting as much retransmission money as possible to make their “numbers” for Wall Street masters while alienating former viewers who left and never returned; launched a plethora of flailing streaming services with a copycat, “spaghetti thrown against the wall” approach that has failed (with a couple of exceptions); treated additional spectrum (dig-inets as if it really was 1960 all over again with a lack of imagination and vision that is astounding; retained the glib “news on your side” “news you can trust” so-called “branding” that appeals to 65+ while doing almost nothing to appeal to younger news viewers. Sold their souls to get sports fronted by autocratic regimes because sports is now the new “save us please” until it isn’t (seen Liv Golf #s lately?). All the while, most big broadcasting companies hollowed out their ad sales teams by cutting pay, commission, and thus expertise at what once was one of the most coveted jobs in a given market to boost short-term profits while eliminating any chance of long-term growth. But I guess it would be so mid-2000s to blame the industry for the industry’s problems rather than the government. It’s 2023, after all. Oh wait, it’s 2024.

Yeah, the FCC doesn’t seem to get it pick on the broadcasters and not go after Big tech which is rivals to the broadcasters in my opinion with a lot of choices this is backwards and abuse of power 3 commish that clearly don’t know how things work. This is going to the courts and be years before the rules ever take effect maybe never will be a rule because the supreme court could rule in the broadcast favor in my opinion. The FCC is a joke the current FCC 3 commish have no spine whatsoever.

It seems we’ve been on a 20-year tear of that, and it’s only contributed to the slow-motion train wreck we find ourselves in today. Profit motive without a viable vision for the future is a doom spiral. The innovators with the answers are the smaller guys who play within the rules, not the big trying to get bigger ones by throwing out any rules.

However, in those regions, TV stations do give priority to weather coverage, and rightfully so! It is a matter of life or death when a tornado hits. I used to live and work in the Southeast U.S., and when hurricane season came through, we handled it just the same as our colleagues in the Midwest handled tornado outbreaks. Yes, local weather is the number-one reason why people still watch local TV news, and I think local meteorologists do a tremendous and important job…and yes, a public service too.

I’m not looking forward to local TV’s demise either. It’s already happening! Blame whatever and whoever you want for it. What’s clear is fewer people are watching local TV news because they no longer see it as relevant. Especially younger viewers who get their news from their smartphones and see no reason to watch TV news.

For all of the hand wringing I hear on here about the FCC, I don’t hear anyone point out that billion-dollar broadcasting corporations are just as much, if not more, to blame for the industry’s state of affairs. These corporations bought up local TV stations in a frenzy and ran the stations with an emphasis on revenue and profit, NOT public service. Now that the advertising revenue is starting to dry up, these corporations are feasting on retransmission fees charged to cable and satellite companies that are likewise losing subscribers and are likewise hesitating to pay. It’s a risky business model!

And what happens then when that tornado hits a community? People go to their TV and realize their cable company doesn’t carry that important local channel anymore. Why? Because [FILL IN THE BLANK BROADCASTER] wanted even more money from [FILL IN THE BLANK CABLE/SATELLITE COMPANY]? Goodness, you mean to tell me a broadcast company that made billions in revenue put business ahead of a public service?

As for being “prematurely retired?” Well, that’s you making assumptions. I chose to leave the business. I work fewer hours and earn a much-better salary as a result. Thanks for asking!

At best, they can only prolong the agony. Technology is the culprit and a very unforgiving one at that. The buggywhip manufacturers learned that lesson the hard way. Broadcasters need to stop looking for regulators to save them and start adapting or get out of the business while they still can walk away with some equity.

Nah, I’m calling out the obvious.

The days of local broadcasting, with the emphasis on local, are done! Most of the TV stations in the United States are owned or controlled by Nexstar, Sinclair, and Gray. Each company is homogenizing local news to various levels, and in some cases, are eliminating local news altogether because it is no longer profitable. What do you think will happen in those news markets when a disaster hits and in the days and weeks afterward? Don’t forget that private equity companies like Apollo Global Management slid into the local news business because profit must be made!

Do you honestly think these companies are truly interested in the public interest? I say no! They’ll pay lip service to the idea but pay more attention to bringing in the profits for shareholders. But when those dang ol’ FCC regulations get in the way of those unmitigated efforts to bring in money? Oh boy, that’s when these companies howl and scream about how unfair it is to play by the rules of the very game they chose to play.

Broadcasters have long served their communities with local news, information and entertainment. The most successful stations are highly engaged with non-profit organizations to help meet needs in their markets. Try and imagine recovering from disasters without the services that local broadcasters provide long after the national spotlight is gone. The FCC decision is at best tone deaf and at the politically motivated.

Never mind the fact that broadcasters are required, by federal law, to operate in the public interest.

Never mind the fact that large broadcasters gobbled up stations, not to serve the public interest, but to have more leverage in renegotiating retransmission fees.

Never mind the fact that large broadcasters already have and currently use loopholes that allow them to control more TV stations through what are effectively shell companies (Nexstar and Mission, Sinclair and Deerfield and Cunningham, etc.).

In case I haven’t made it clear, I don’t sympathize with the broadcast industry here. Broadcasters ignored the possibilities of digital and streaming news as far back as the 1990s. Broadcasters effectively ignored their duty to operate in the public interest in favor of operating in the shareholders’ interest. Yet, they signed up to play this game when they sought and received FCC licenses to broadcast on the public airwaves. How surprising that they must play by the rules of the very game they signed up to play.

Or, to quote a line from the 1980 comedy classic Airplane…

“They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into. I say, let ‘em crash!”

Comment on ADTH Announces Start Of NextGen TV Receiver Shipments by Rick https://tvnewscheck.com/tech/article/adth-announces-start-of-nextgen-tv-receiver-shipments/#comment-127793 Wed, 27 Dec 2023 12:22:50 +0000 https://tvnewscheck.com/?p=299814#comment-127793 I purchased the ADTH Box. It was warrantied for 1 year, but functioned for only 20 days when the audio died. Here are a few observations.

ATSC 3.0 is supposed to be robust. This Box was better than ATSC 1.0, but the picture still fluttered with airplanes and wind gusts. Even in times of calm, sound and picture often lost sync.

Channel numbers were too small and incredibly hard to read, so viewers had to rise from their chairs and approach the monitor. The remote required a lot of scrolling up and down unless bookmarks were used. Even getting to the bookmarked channels required heavy scrolling. Scrolling was never rapid – just one channel at a time. Bookmarked channels were given a tiny bit of color that disappeared – unless the viewer rose and approached the monitor. There was an onscreen keypad to manually switch channels, but the effort to select it and then use the navigation buttons negated its usefulness. There was a feature to manually add individual channels, but users were required to know the channel’s MHz. Most of the buttons were the same black plastic as the case, so they were invisible when viewers turned down the lights. Every software update reassigned button functions, so the user constantly had to relearn the remote. The back of the remote consisted of three or more different curves, making it strangely unstable. It tended to fall to the floor unless it was placed face down. Because of some electronic issues, ADTH Support recommended I try their beta. Beta locked up my system and I had to rescan.

Remote controls were invented to make TV viewing easier. This remote was constant work and frustration. It was exhausting.

Comment on Best Of Talking TV: When Is NextGen TV Revenue Coming? by jcrollman https://tvnewscheck.com/tech/article/best-of-talking-tv-when-is-nextgen-tv-revenue-coming/#comment-127790 Fri, 22 Dec 2023 17:05:04 +0000 https://tvnewscheck.com/?p=304645#comment-127790 When demoing OTA channels on our new premium fitness product line in our product showroom this week, one of our PM’s said – “What are all these crappy old channels? Can we get rid of them?” He was referring to the broadcast diginets.

For NextGenTV to succeed, they need to give consumers something they want. Right now, all broadcaster’s offer that has any value whatsoever is local news, which can be had with ATSC 1.0. Even the value of those have come into question.

The NextGenTV consortium needs to ask themselves what they are selling that consumers want? Everything depends on consumers buying and caring about the product you are offering. Currently, nobody has asked our company to develop an ATSC 3.0 tuner for our fitness product. Not one person. So we won’t be integrating the technology in the foreseeable future. You know what we just implemented in our product due to multiple requests? PlutoTV. That reality should speak volumes.

FInd something that moves the needle. And do it yesterday. Or the NextGenTV ship is sunk.

Hint: 4k isn’t enough anymore. People have bought their cheap 4k TV’s only to have the prevailing ‘non-4k’ content upscaled so the content they consume looks like junk. Consumers have tuned-out the ‘benefits’ of 4k argument, probably for good. And for good reason.

Hint #2: It needs to be something that moves the needle. Like HDR 4k NFL football, that will demonstrate the advantages in large numbers.

The Jennifer Hudson Show 10AM to 11AM also 5PM on WXSP,
Who The Bleep Is That yes that is a title for a game show 3:30PM to 4PM,
Pawn Stars gets a full hour 2PM to 3PM never got a full hour when it was 5 days a week in 2016 to 2018 on WXSP been on the weekend since 2018 where 5AM, 6AM, 7AM, 11:30PM on Sat, this year 6AM on Sun,
Extra gets access prime been a decade since it has been on in access prime 7PM to 7:30PM WOTV 1AM to 1:30AM,
TMZ will get 3 airings 7:30PM to 8PM, 10:30PM to 11PM on WXSP, 1:30AM to 2AM on Wood TV,
TMZ Live will also get 3 airings as well 3PM to 4PM on Wood TV, 3AM to 4AM on WXSP, CW6 4AM to 5AM which will be M-F which Mon will be from Fri.

I’m calling it CW6 since that is where WOTV DT2 is at since 2 or 3 weeks ago when channel 6 was added was deleted 9 years ago was either QVC or HSN on channel 6. On Charter Spectrum be different from other pay-TV.

Phil Repeats move from 10AM to the graveyard 5AM, Tamron Hall moves from 11AM to 10AM.

WWE is Sports & Entertainment yes I know that winners are already determined before the match and wrestlers can get injured in the square circle/ring, I know I couldn’t take the bumps I’d get seriously injured. The wrestlers are athletes as well. I don’t watch wrestling stopped watching 20 years ago where I’d watch every week for Raw & Smackdown fazed out over time on watching WWE.

I think broadcasters knew much of this already. But the industry can’t make the same dollars as selling broadcast air. So what to do?

Comment on For TV News, Rebuilding Trust Is Core Imperative For Election Year by kcgiants99@gmail.com https://tvnewscheck.com/journalism/article/for-tv-news-rebuilding-trust-is-core-imperative-for-election-year/#comment-127775 Fri, 15 Dec 2023 04:38:51 +0000 https://tvnewscheck.com/?p=304295#comment-127775 Scripps is being cheap and is just spin with community with more MMJs on the streets seen a promo about not reporting on crime with the youth on Fox17 I haven’t seen the results still reporting on crime if it bleeds it leads. Local news plays in the middle for the most part better than cable news that are just in tribal camps.

Comment on For TV News, Rebuilding Trust Is Core Imperative For Election Year by Former Producer https://tvnewscheck.com/journalism/article/for-tv-news-rebuilding-trust-is-core-imperative-for-election-year/#comment-127774 Thu, 14 Dec 2023 20:38:06 +0000 https://tvnewscheck.com/?p=304295#comment-127774 Let’s also not forget that Scripps is saving money in all of this. Yes, the company is hiring more MMJs to cover news and paying them more money to do so. However, Scripps is eliminating a number of news anchor and general manager positions, and is cutting back on production by using pre-recorded news in markets as large as Tampa. That’s money saved! No highly-paid news anchor to sit on set. No highly-paid general manager to sit behind a desk. No need to pay overtime to overworked producers and directors in order to get a newscast on the air.

It could also be a way for Scripps to eventually attract prospective buyers. Yes, as far as I know, Scripps is NOT for sale. But it’s common for companies to cut costs and say, “Hey, potential buyer, our balance sheet shows lower operating costs and higher revenue. How about some merger and acquisition activity?” I worked for a now-defunct broadcaster that used the same strategy.

Scripps deserves credit for at least trying something different. But this is as much — if not more — about money as it is about viewer trust.

I’ve seen Mr. McShane on NewsNation and he does a really good job. They’ve also turned Cuomo into someone who has a moderate view and not extreme talking points from either side of the aisle. Media distrust started going down hill when newspaper editorials spent so much time in a room deciding who they’d endorse, what a joke. Let American’s make up their own minds, they all live differently than a reporter.

Reporting on hyper local news does nothing to create trust. It is a gimmick to create the illusion of caring and credibility. Try hiring reporters who aren’t part of the left wing media cult. Diversity of political opinions in reporting is the only solution. Stop doing the thinking for your viewers. Stop insulting their intelligence. Let them figure it out. TV news is intellectually boring.

That’s why I wrote an essay about women in leadership positions. Equally important is her status as a news director in the contemporary media landscape. Indeed, it’s quite challenging. It involves many responsibilities, including overseeing various delivery mechanisms, managing personnel, and addressing the challenges brought about by events like the COVID-19 pandemic, racial unrest, and political division.

I want to share my dissertation on this platform https://eduhelper/essay-samples/feminism. Perhaps some girl will read it and realize, just like I did, that women are strong too. This will be my contribution – help for student girls in shaping their destinies.

I am confident that women like Emily will continue contributing to society after retirement.
