KCCI Unveils All New Storm Chaser

Hearst-owned CBS affiliate KCCI Des Moines, Iowa (DMA 69) has rolled out the latest generation of the KCCI Storm Chaser weather vehicle Wednesday on KCCI 8 News at Six. The new Storm Chaser has been custom equipped with the latest technology, including an all-weather 360 degree panning camera, on-board weather tools, live radar reception and the ability for a meteorologist to go live from the road at any moment. KCCI Chief Meteorologist Kurtis Gertz called the Storm Chaser an unrivaled tool. “The Storm Chaser’s mix of rugged capability and technology will allow us an up-close view at how storms are changing and their impact on the ground.”

Karl Chevrolet performed the fabrication for the Storm Chaser in its Emergency Vehicle facility that started with a stock 2017 Chevy Tahoe. “We work on hundreds of vehicles every year that are designed to keep the public safe. The KCCI Storm Chaser was an exciting project to be a part of because of the technology involved and the impact it will have during weather coverage,” said the company’s Carl Moyer.

Karl Chevrolet’s partnership with KCCI on the storm chaser program started years ago as a way to put their weather team in a safe Chevrolet vehicle to cover the ever-changing Iowa weather.

The KCCI Storm Chaser will go into immediate use. It will be on display at the Iowa State Fair (Aug. 10-20) weekday afternoons.
