Lythgoe is also co-creator and executive producer of the Fox dance competition series, whose 18th season is set to start in March.
So You Think You Can Dance returns to Fox on March 4 for Season 18. Joining Nigel Lythgoe on the judging panel are Allison Hoker, choreographer for Dancing with the Stars, and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who was a professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars. Cat Deeley returns as host.
So You Think You Can Dance has tapped sitcom vet Leah Remini to fill the vacancy left by Matthew Morrison, who was ousted as a Season 17 judge in May. Remini will make her judging debut on the Fox competition’s June 15 episode (9 p.m./8c), which will not only reveal this season’s Top 12 contestants, but will also mark So You Think You Can Dance‘s 300th episode. She joins Stephen “tWitch” Boss and JoJo Siwa on the dais.
When the competition show returns to Fox for Season 17 on Wednesday, May 18, it’ll do so with an entirely new panel of judges: onetime SYTYCD finalist Stephen “tWitch” Boss, Glee and Broadway alum Matthew Morrison, and robbed Dancing With the Stars runner-up JoJo Siwa. This makes longtime host Cat Deeley the only returning member of the show’s on-camera team.
The door, however, remains open for the Fox franchise to return in summer 2021.
So You Think You Can Dance has been renewed for a 17th season at Fox. Bailey Munoz was named the winner of the most recent season of the dance competition series. Auditions for the new season will begin next month.

A season high for Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance helped the network to a first place finish among viewers 18-49. Dance averaged a 1.7 rating among 18-49s from 8-10 p.m., its highest rating this summer and up 31% from a 1.3 last week. The reality dance competition was also up 20% week-to-week among total viewers, from 4.4 million to 5.3 million, and it grew 36% among 18-34s as well. Powered by Dance, Fox easily led the night among 18-49s with a 1.7 average overnight rating and a 6 share.
The unscripted competition show that’s been a fixture of the network’s summer schedule for nine seasons will return to Fox for a 10th.
The ninth season of So You Think You Can Dance bows in May with Hell’s Kitchen, Masterchef and Hotel Hell also receiving dates on the schedule.

Fox Racks Up Another Win With ‘Dance’
So You Think You Can Dance continued its strong start to the season with its first Wednesday episode last night. Dance averaged a 3.0 adults 18-49 rating from 8 to 10 p.m., up 7% over its Wednesday premiere last year. That follows Thursday’s season premiere, which grew 7% over last year to a 3.2. Last night’s show also jumped 14% in total viewers compared to last year, to 8.4 million.
‘Dance’ Premiere Delivers For Fox
The two-hour premiere of So You Think You Can Dance delivered Fox an easy ratings win on Thursday night against a broadcast slate rife with reruns. Dance averaged a 3.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.1 million viewers overall. That was up 7% compared to last season’s debut for the highest-rated premiere in three years and the most-watched debut in four years.
Media company CKx Inc., which owns proprietary rights to American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, said Tuesday is being sold to a private equity group for about $511 million in cash.
